The result is a dense, rigid panel known for its warm, natural-material aesthetics — think wood grain, stone-look, or solid colour finishes. - HPL panels typically carry Class A fire ratings suitable for many commercial applications, though specific assembly testing (per standards like CAN/ULC-S134) is still required to confirm compliance for a given building height and use group.
In both cases, the panel choice must be paired with a compliant subframe and, in some assemblies, a fire-rated insulation layer — this is where early design input matters most.
Cost and Installation
ACM panels are generally the more budget-friendly option per square foot and are widely available with faster lead times, since they’re a staple product across North American suppliers. HPL panels tend to carry a higher material cost, reflecting their denser core and more involved manufacturing process, but many owners find the natural aesthetic worth the premium for street-facing façades.
Installation methods are similar for both — mechanically fastened or clipped to a metal subframe in a rainscreen assembly — though HPL’s added thickness and weight can mean slightly more robust subframing and fastening specifications.
Maintenance
- ACM: Wipe-down cleaning with mild detergent; PVDF coatings resist fading for decades.
- HPL: Similarly low-maintenance; the compressed resin surface resists staining and doesn’t require repainting or resealing.
Neither material needs the sanding, staining, or sealing that traditional wood or stucco cladding demands.
